Why 80% of Resolutions Fail, and What You Can Do Differently in 2025
How about a fresh start, without the same old struggles?
Every January, we feel it: the pull of fresh starts and clean slates. It’s almost instinctual: This year, I’m going to eat better, move more, stress less, and finally stick to my goals.
But by February, it’s all too familiar.
The gym shoes are untouched.
The meal plan is abandoned.
Those big resolutions are quietly shelved for next year.
Sound familiar? It’s frustrating, isn’t it?
For years, I thought it was my fault. I believed I lacked discipline or drive. But as I explored the science of behaviour change, I discovered something powerful:
The problem isn’t us. It’s the way we set goals.
Why Resolutions Fail
Most resolutions are set up to fail from the start. Why?
They are too vague.
"Get healthier" sounds great, but what does it actually mean? They are too big.
Overhauling your entire routine overnight is overwhelming. They rely on willpower.
And let’s be honest, after the holidays, willpower is running on fumes.
When life inevitably gets messy, whether it’s work deadlines, family demands, or sheer exhaustion, it’s easy to let those big, vague goals slip.
And then we blame ourselves.
Why can’t I stick to anything?
What’s wrong with me?
Why even try if I’m just going to fail?
But here’s the truth: It’s not about willpower. It’s about strategy.
What I Wish I Knew Earlier
When I first learned about habit formation, it was a revelation. Lasting change doesn’t come from effort or perfection. It comes from:
Starting small.
Tiny habits, like drinking a glass of water in the morning, build momentum.Aligning goals with your values.
When your goals reflect what truly matters to you, they feel meaningful (and easier to stick with).Designing for real life.
Life is messy and unpredictable. Your goals should fit into your reality, not fight against it.
What If This Year Felt Different?
Imagine goals that work for you. Not because you’re forcing yourself, but because they’re simple, sustainable, and aligned with who you are.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll share tools and strategies to help you approach 2025 with clarity and confidence. Together, we’ll explore:
How to set goals that matter (and let go of the ones that don’t).
The magic of small, consistent habits.
How to navigate challenges when life inevitably gets in the way.
Because it’s not about perfection. It’s about progress.
