This is so true. You've absolutely nailed it here. Successful people just naturally invent narratives, and the worst of all sometimes they don't even notice they are doing it. And those who want help naturally seek out those narratives, despite the overwhelming evidence they are not true or helpful.
I don't know if you've ever read Nassim Taleb on this stuff - we are just all bouncing around, buffeted by the waves, trying to make the best of it.

especially the ones we believe we "must" tell ourselves...

Fooled By Randomness was my favourite of his. It starts about financial markets, but by the end changes the way you think about everything.
